FIRST PROJECT TUTORIAL

We had our first review on 9 March. Our group consists of three members, because our research direction is the same, and we also think that we can help each other. We presented our concept to tutor and the general direction of this project. For this project, we chose a market in London as the plan area. Our inspiration came from Inception. We hope to have the same elements in our projects. We all like the concept of folding space.

Our project aims to make people aware of the importance of environmental protection. Nowadays, our environment is suffering from serious pollution. We will make a short film about the environment pollution. This movie will be played on a screen in the market.

PREPARE MY THESIS REVIEW

Recently ,I am reading a paper called Life cycle and prefabrication in buildings: A review and case studies in Hong Kong. The author are Lara Jaillon and John Carlos. They are the teather of City university of Hong Kong. The paper presents two case studies in HK of recently completed insitutional building using prefabrication. They think prefabrication buildings can promote sustainable development.

The first term I have two projects and all used wood and CNC. I think CNC is just a kind of prefabrecation because I cut wood in pieces previous in the wood work shop and then install them in my plan area.

my first project called the sound animals

So all I done this week is for my thesis review. Actually I am really interested in prefabrecation and I read lots of paper about it. In the following learning process, I will continue to explore this knowledge and apply it to my own design.

OUR STUDY TRIP TO WHISTABLE

Today we went to the Whistable, it is a seaside city. We walked along the seashore and saw many beautiful scenery. There are a few boats and cabins by the sea. There are also wind turbines in the sea. This city has many delicious oysters. I heard that everyone will come here to taste them, but this time I have no chance to eat . The wind on the beach is very strong, and I have a relaxed feeling. I like seaside cities very much. I can run and exercise on the seaside every day. When I am tired, I can watch the sea and relax. The most important thing is there are lots of fresh seafood.

OUR STUDY TRIP TO LONDON

Today we went to London to study and travel. We visited many different spaces and buildings in order to select our our project sites. We first went to the Smithfield Market. This market is used to sell meat, and you can smell the smell of meat as soon as you enter the door. The busiest time in this market is in the morning. After ten o’clock no one sells anything. This market was built in the 19th century so it is a very old market in London. The architectural style of this market is very similar to that of the nineteenth century. The purple structural is also very eye-catching.

After that we went to the Barbican center. It’s a commercial residence complex there. Residents and businesses are connected, and there is a very large sky garden. In this magical sky garden, there are not only rich green plants, but also a pond and some rides, which are very functional. The decorative surfaces of these buildings are also very exquisite. It is said that they were designed by the designers at the time. We crossed the sky garden to the commercial building. There is a theater and a show. We took a look at this show and looked at the interior style of the building, which makes people feel comfortable.

THE FINAL REVIEW OF MY SECOND PROJECT

This week we have a final review, and many guests will come to see our work together. I was assigned to report my work in the morning, and it was TOM who helped me rate it. At first I was nervous. At first, I drew drawing pictures on the wall, and then started hanging my device, testing the projector, testing the Bluetooth player and my story. In the end, I prepared my story again.

THE LAST WEEK OF MY SECOND PROJECT

i am recording the sound

This week is the last week for us to making our device. I changed the background music of my story to a sound I recorded by myself. I recorded the sounds of the night at school, and the sound of cicadas and the sound of the wind. Combining these three sounds became my background music.

combine three sounds together

In the last week I started testing my device. How to hang it up and show it. I went to B & Q to buy a few hooks, and then hooked my curtains to the ceiling. I borrowed a projector at school and I also need to test if the projector can place my pictures on my curtain. The picture on the curtain is the shadow of John Soane. When visitors come to see this shadow and listen to night thoughts, they will want to know more about this great architect.

OUR CONSTRUCTION WEEK

the sound animal

This week is a construction week and we are all building our installations. The outside of our installation is CNC cut. We first draw the shape of each piece in CAD and then cut it out in the wood workshop. Our device is inspired by the shape of sound waves. From the side, our device looks like sound waves, but from the front it looks like some kind of cute animal. It has a fat body and a tail made of cotton and limbs. , So we named our device sound animal. In fact, inside its shell is our special metal microphone. We glue a kitchen utensil and a jar together, and perforate the cotton thread at the bottom.

OUR THIRD TUTORIAL

we are testing the sound

We did a lot of tests this week and finally found a solution to solve our problem . We found that when the two cotton threads are at right angles and tight, the sound can still be transmitted. So next step we are going to start making the device, and at the same time we are going to make a food delivery system around the top of the forest table. We want to pass food to each other while talking to each other. Besides, there will be an event at the end of our final review, we need to bring food, we can use this device to chat with each other while sharing food together by using our food delivery system.

We used cotton and wood slivers to simulate the position of our device and the position of the cotton thread

OUR SECOND TUTORIAL

we are testing and making model

Today, our team reported our current ideas and progress to the tutors. We decided to make a device that can spread sound. This device will have a very interesting shape with cotton threads in the middle. We tested several materials and found that Metal materials and cotton are the best materials for transmitting sound. We also encountered some other problems, that is, we need to connect two diagonal sounds, but the cotton thread cannot touch any object, otherwise it will affect the vibration and cannot spread the sound. We must solve this problem first, because we cannot avoid the cotton thread from touching other posts.
