Our group consists of six people, and we had a meeting last week discussed about the ideas of our project. We believe that the relationship between people can be brought closer by reforming the forest table. This relationship can be friendship, teacher-student relationship, or relationship between strangers.

Sound is the most direct way of communication between people, and it is also the most direct medium to close the relationship between people. We want to get closer to peoplethrough the spread of sound. We intend to make a device that can spread sound, so that people on the table can use our device to communicate with another corner person.

We have experimented that sound can propagate through the amplitude of the line, so we decided to add line to the device, and we think that the line can also represent the connection between people.

Today we went to the V & A Museum  because we have already decided that the theme of project one is the supper club, and there is a show about food in this museum. This show is very interesting. It talked about how traditional food is made and various daily necessities made from food. The mixed flavors of many foods we are familiar with can stimulate people's taste buds and bring different sensations. Food itself is not only used to fill the stomach, but also to create art. Art is derived from details that we have not noticed in life.

This week I started to make my story. I searched the Internet for a lot of materials and found that John Soane’s house has a collection of night thoughts. The Complaint: or, Night-Thoughts on Life, Death, & Immortality, better known simply as Night-Thoughts, is a long poem  published in nine parts (or “nights”) between 1742 and 1745 by Edward Young. This poem is talking about life ,death and friendship. I will read this poem and give some mystery background music.

When visitors pass by this device, they will be attracted by the sound so that they can sit on my chair and listen to this magic poem while imagining what kind of person John  Soane is.

After I showed my story to Lucy, she gave me some advices. She thought I should change the background music to a more natural sound, similar to the sound of the wind, the sound of the night, or the sound of closing the door, so I decided to record these sounds outdoors and then modify my story again.

This week, we just came back from our holiday. I gave Lucy my last feedback. She said that she asked me to focus on my story. Then we found a lot of information on the Internet together. I borrowed two books from the library about John Soane. So I’m going to find some materials from these two books and turn them into stories. Then I’ll read them and match them with background music.

This week we had the review, and we need to make 10 papers to show our projects. All the tutors and guests came and have a look. I introduced my works. First of all, I found the works of two artists as a reference, including curtain and chair elements in their works. My work is composed of a high chair, curtains and stories. I’ll put a player in the pocket of the curtain. It will play my own mysterious story about John Soane. I want to create a mysterious atmosphere for my work, just like John’s mysterious life. His home is now a museum. When we go in to visit, we can feel the mysterious atmosphere. He has many magical collections, which attracts me very much. So I want to make a device to let tourists feel these things.

This is the third tutorial with my tutor. I have already make one in the wood work shop. And I first draw every different shape of wood in CAD and then went to cut the wood. Also my red curtain is ready with a little pocket.

This is the second tutorial with my tutor. So this time I decided to change my design, I am going to make a pieces of wood chair. It will be made of several pieces of wood and I will use a long nail to connect these wood.

But my tutor though that it will be too heavy because we need to make a packable device and it needs to be easy carry. She advised me to make a CNC chair and give me some examples of it. I think I need to make a really CNC chair next week and also prepare a red curtain with a pocket on it.

This week I had my first tutorial with lucy, and I decided to make a folding chair with a red curtain covered background. Because I think the red curtain just looks like a collection in the museum, and it should be more mysterious. Maybe like the performance or story behind the curtain. Actually, we need to make a packable device so this chair can be folded to a piece. The red curtain will cover the wood, and it can also be folded to another side so that the space will be divided into two separate sections.

Last week we went to London to visit Sir John Soane’s Museum. It is really a beautiful museum with amazing works here. It is a house museum which was formerly the home of John Soane. He is an architect. There are also many drawings and models of his projects in this museum.

My planning site is the corridor space next to the colonnade with a eoof light. As we can not take photo and sketch in this museum so i only can estimate my site. There are many sculptures all over the three side walls and i deicided to let my device at the center of this space ,or may be more inside .

This is our first project. It is called sound animal because it looks like two little pigs and their tails are link together. This device encourage people to make friends and link people together. We aimed to let people start talking with the stranger and also we have a food-delivery system which around the top of the forest table, it allow people to transfer their food and shall with each other.

Actually we have tried many materials and shape of our sound animals, finally we made a metal cup to spread sound. It is translations of cook and can. And there is a cotton line connect two animals, so when you talk to this animal , people who at another side can hear your voice. We also found that when the cotton line hits a pillar or other object, the sound cannot spread, so we knot the cotton lines around the column and then tension the two cottons at 90 degrees so that the sound can spread.

The shape of our sound animals is from the sound wave ,when you look at the side face it just like sound wave, some higer and some lower. We cut many pieces of wood and connect them together with long screws. We have reserved a position on each piece of wood that can pass through the microphone, and then we put the microphone into the animal.
